Family Psychology
Family plays a vital role in the emotional, psychological, behavioural, and social development of an individual. The mental health of every member in a family decides the total wellbeing of that family. Family counselling aims at addressing emotional, psychological, and behavioural issues from which family problems arise. The therapist or counsellor works with the family members to resolve the issues and foster healthy relationship among them.
Family counselling, or family therapy, is a method to develop and maintain healthy and functional family relationships. The goal is to identify and address problems in the family.
Premarital Counselling
Marriage Counselling
After the wedding ceremony, couples learn that marriages are not made in heaven, but they have to make it heavenly, and it requires hard work and commitment. When the blissful honeymoon-period ends, they often realize that their compatibility is not as strong as they assumed to be. Or they face problems which they never dreamt of. Or they may be unable to nurture their relationship due to their respective careers consuming all their time. These hiccups are certainly very normal and consulting a marriage counsellor may go a long way towards strengthening and sometimes even saving the marital relationship.
Child Behavioural Counselling
Behaviour therapy focuses on strengthening positive child behaviours and erase or reduce problematic or unwanted behaviours. This includes parent training in behaviour management. Parents learn by working with the therapist and improve skills to manage their child’s behaviour.
Behaviour problems that last for six months or more may indicate that a child needs behavioural therapy. These problems are often more complicated and can involve aggressive or disruptive behaviour. Children with behavioural problems don’t appear to behave according to their age.
Behavioural Counselling
Behavioural Counselling aims at eradicating unwanted or maladaptive behaviour. This therapy is sought for those with behavioural issues or certain mental health conditions that involve unwanted behaviour. Behavioural Counselling directs at potentially destructive and unhealthy behaviours. The primary objective of any behavioural treatment is to induce a positive change rather than drastically change the behaviour.
According to behavioural science, our behaviour is learned and therefore, can be unlearned. So, if an individual’s responses are affecting his/her day-to-day life and relationships then it’s time to find help.
Language Counselling
Language is a powerful tool not only to communicate but also build and maintain relationships. Words can make or break a relationship. Language of an individual changes according to his or her emotions. Usually, harsh words are used when angry and soft words are used when happy. Words when uttered cannot be taken back. They decide the tone of language and it in turn decides if the communication is assertive, or meek, harsh, or polite. Language counselling helps to eliminate unnecessary and negative words under any circumstances when communicating with family members.
Mental Health Counselling
Our mental state defines our overall well-being. It denotes our awareness of our own abilities and how well we manage the ups and downs of life.
We can maintain sound mental health with self-care but, if we experience a problem, we may require further help, for example, through talking therapies such as psychotherapy and counselling.
According to the Mental Health Foundation, traditionally mental health conditions have been divided into two categories; ‘neurotic’ (which is now more frequently called ‘common mental health problems’) and ‘psychotic’ (where symptoms interfere with your perception of reality).
Career Counselling
Seeking career counselling is very important to those who need help in choosing or changing a career and this can happen at any stage of life.
Life in adulthood often depends on the career chosen. It can even be stressful when the economic conditions of a country are not favourable, or an individual’s family faces financial difficulties.
A career counselor can help by showcasing and discussing one’s potential career options. Choosing a career is a very important task, but it may also be a strenuous one. Often, it is not easy to decide what type of job suits the best. Career counselling helps people assess their talent, skills, needs, and desires to find a career that fits them.
Educational Counselling
Innumerable courses, mushroom growth of colleges and universities, tough competition make a student feel overwhelmed in choosing a course as well as the place of study. Educational Counselling mainly refers to aiding and guiding students in making the right choices in their course of study, choice of stream and specialisation as well as the selection of college or university as per their career aspirations.
Educational Counselling plays vital role in every student’s life as it helps them make conscious decisions at every step of their academic and professional journey.
Counselling for Substance Abuse
(Drugs and Alcohol)
Counselling and therapy for addiction help individuals understand what factors cause addiction, learn about risk factors that lead to relapse and evolve ways and means for handling stressful situations. The common techniques employed generally include cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, and dialectical behavioural therapy.
The prime causes of addiction are mostly genetic and environmental. An individual’s genetic format can make him or her more susceptible to sensation-seeking behaviour, more irresistible and more exposed to addiction. Unfavourable episodes in life such as trauma, stress, and early subjection to substance abuse can also affect the cognitive and behavioural domains of an individual. Addiction leads to physical and mental abnormalities.
Sexual Disorders Counselling
Talking about sex itself is a taboo in many parts of the world, leave alone sexual disorders. Keeping sex related issues to oneself, getting advice from friends who lack required knowledge, wrong guidance by quacks who claim to be experts, myths and fears formed during childhood lead to psychological sexual disorders in adulthood in both male and female.
People suffering from sexual disorders have low confidence level and eventually develop inferiority complex if professional help is not sought. These disorders cause disharmony between couples which may affect the whole family.
Counselling, Psychotherapy, Behavioural therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy would greatly help apart from medical intervention.
Obsessive Love Disorder Counselling
Obsessive love disorder is a condition that leads an individual to encounter obsessive feelings he or she might misunderstand as love for another person. A person with obsessive love disorder would give way to these feelings, even if they are not responded to. Generally, obsessive love disorder could be an indication to a mental health condition.
Attachment disorders are strongly linked to provoking obsessive love disorder. When people are unable to develop healthy attachments with other people, it affects the quality of relationships they have and how they behave with other people.
Counselling for Phobias
Every human being has one fear or the other. Whether it is a fear of heights or fear of dogs, there are different objects, places, or animals that can trigger an unpleasant sensation or make the individual choose between flight or fight mode.
Fear is totally a natural human emotion but, in some people, fears are more obvious which gradually manifest into phobias. A phobia is a devastating and exhausting fear that develops when someone has a magnified sense of danger towards a certain object or situation. They can be astonishingly stressful to live with and, in serious cases, can affect the well-being and overall way of life.
Living with a phobia means people are often in nonstop agony if they may encounter what they are afraid of. However, constantly trying to escape a particular phobia is likely to make it seem worse than it really is. Treatment for phobias can help to break this negative thought process and get the feelings of anxiety under control.
Counselling for Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
(SAD)
Without proper awareness, people who suffer from depression may feel alone and helpless. They think they are the only ones going through that phase. But on the contrary, millions of people in the world struggle with this mood disorder in their day today lives.
People in depression feel that they have been trapped in an intolerable situation. Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. Anxious feelings are a normal reaction to a situation where the individual feels pressure. Interestingly, some people feel anxious for no apparent reason or continue to be the same even after the stressful situation has passed.
Stress and anxiety have the same symptoms – poor or over appetite irregular sleep cycle, lethargy, body aches, anger, poor attention span. Only the cause is different.
